Meet our Massage Therapist Ann Newland

Ann is a certified massage therapist at Tranquility Spa at Sea Pines Golf Resort. With over 1,000 hours of massage therapy and healing arts training under her belt, she brings a unique blend of bodywork styles to the massage table. Her repertoire of skills extends from Swedish to Energy massaging techniques, including Hawaiian Lomi, Lomi, Esalen, and Reiki styles blended with the Eastern styles of Shiatsu. Ann is also a master of Acupressure and Reflexology, so rest easy knowing she is the perfect person to lead you through your total healing experience. In addition to massage therapy, Ann is also a certified Qigong Teacher. She has been studying and practicing Qigong for almost 15 years, and continues to advance her studies in the powerfully effective self healing exercise. 

Qigong sessions conducted by Ann at the Sea Pines Golf Resort are held on most Saturdays (weather permitting) at 8:30 am. Everyone is invited, and although Ann welcomes $10 donations for this 1–1.5-hour workshop, it is not mandatory. What you do need is an open mind, free-flowing attire matched by comfortable shoes. Don’t worry, unlike your yoga classes you won’t need a mat. Ann conducts all exercises from a standing position.

You will be led through a salvo of simple flowing movements, stretches, standing meditative postures, and breath work exercises. When you’re done with this, Ann facilitates self-massage and acupressure session guaranteed to help with dissipating healing energy through the entirety of your mind and body. This also frees up all the ‘locked tension’ and stress, so you can feel refreshed, enlivened and energized to enjoy the rest of your Saturday playing golf, surfing, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, or just plain relaxing on our beautiful Central Coast.

What is Qigong?

Qigong is the ancient art of manipulating the body’s ‘internal energy’ or ‘life force.’ It originated in China about 3000 years ago, and while it does sound a lot like Taichi, it is fundamentally different in that it covers more areas of self-improvement and requires lesser effort to learn than its close cousin. This doesn’t mean Qigong is less effective, by manipulating Qi, the vital life force that sustains all life, Qigong delivers to its practitioners the ability to heal, boost energy levels, and cultivate spiritual upliftment. This triad of benefits underlines why Qigong is further subdivided into Medical Qigong, Martial Qigong, and Spiritual Qigong.

Medical Qigong is by far the more popular of the three, and for a good reason too. It is the oldest division of the four pillars of Chinese traditional medicine and the bedrock on which specialty fields like acupuncture, herbal medicine, and Tuina subsists. If you enjoy any of these activities on a regular spa day, then that’s another reason to plug into the Qigong experience at the Sea Pines Golf Resort.

With Martial Qigong, the emphasis is on increasing energy levels and physical fitness. Master it well enough, and you gain the ability to surmount otherwise tedious physical tasks like maintaining your stamina over the course of strenuous exercises, breaking bricks or even bending steel wires.  Guess who’s an expert to guide you through the nitty-gritty of Martial Qigong? Yeah, you guessed right, Ann.

Spiritual Qigong takes Qi a step further. Spiritual Qigong is concerned with Qigong practice resulting in the "Qigong state", a focused awareness of existing in the present moment. It provides the final piece to the jigsaw puzzle of wholesome completeness of both mind and body.

As with Martial and Medical Qigong, Ann is a veteran practitioner and teacher of Spiritual Qigong. In the last 15 years, she has dedicated her time to learning the subtle intricacies and underlying secrets that make Qigong such an effective tool for the revitalization of mind and body.
