Your Entrance to

Montaña de Oro

Whether you're into hiking, biking, or horseback riding, spend some time exploring the sandy shores, majestic foothills, and gentle sloping dunes of Montaña de Oro State Park, located just moments away from Sea Pines Golf Resort. Known as "MDO," by locals, this park offers 8,000 acres of trails and beaches for you to enjoy during your stay.

Hiking: Montana de Oro offers beautifully maintained trails with flora and fauna and striking ocean and mountain views.

Try out the Bluff Trail in Montana de Oro. The Bluff Trail begins at the parking lot on Pecho Valley Road. This level hike is about 2.1 miles as a loop, and offers stunning coastal views right on the bluffs.

For a more strenuous hike, try Valencia Peak, also accessible from the parking lot on Pecho Valley Road. This 4.5 mile hike gains over 1,000 feet in elevation - certainly a trek, but the views all the way up are stunning and panoramic. It is one of the highest points in Montana de Oro, and is an excellent hike to cross off your bucket list. The views up the mountaintop are wide and expansive, you'll be able to see unobstructed ocean for miles in addition to rolling hills on the other side.

Oats Peak is another strenuous Montana de Oro hike, which differs from Valencia eak argely because of the differences in views. As Oats Peak is more inland than Valencia Peak, you'll see more views of the hills and mountaintops, in addition to less dramatic ocean views. To start the hike to Oats Peak, you can begin from a trailhead behind the park visitor center in Spooner's Ranch House on the road into Islay Creek Campground.
